Surround yourself with good people

Happy Monday! Are you ready for another week? I am. I admit that I’m trying hard not to rush the weeks so I can be done with chemo, but it’s a bit tough to not want this over.

I am in awe of the ever-growing display of cards from friends and family that adorn my kitchen island. I started to move the cards to another location but decided I love seeing them spread in the kitchen. Every time I walk into the kitchen, I smile at the feeling of being so supported through this challenging time.

These also serve as a good reminder of staying focused on the here and now, and appreciating what’s in front of us. I admit that I’ve caught myself thinking a bit too often of the people that I haven’t heard from during my cancer diagnosis and treatment, or even felt a little hurt by those who always state us to be great friends, yet are instead MIA during this. But, over the years, I’ve learned that everyone handles things differently and the rough moments in one’s life truly can show who is meant to be in your life. I’m not upset with these people as the reality is that not everyone knows how to handle tough situations. They feel a loss of words or are uncomfortable with supporting another or may be facing issues in their own lives. And honestly, that’s ok. Because I’d rather have people who are going to be supportive, kind and there for me, no matter what’s happening in my life.

It does, however, remind me to stay focused on what and who I do have in my life, and friends, my life is full! I am beyond grateful at the beauty and love in my life. Cancer certainly can never change that.

Lots of love and kindness on display.

As I walk into my kitchen and see all my cards, reply to the constant flood of calls and messages, and truly be wrapped in love by so many in my life, I’m aware how much better it is to focus on those who bring positive energy to our lives. It can be easy to get caught up in what we’re missing or don’t have. The challenge with focusing on what or who we think is missing or the less of our lives is that we often then miss or don’t see all that we DO have in our lives.

So to all of you who have flooded my mailbox, inbox, refrigerator and my life with love, kindness, friendship, laughs and SO much more, THANK YOU. You are very, very appreciated. I will not lose sight of you and your value in my life.

A note on the blog header – If you’re a regular reader, you know that I try to stay focused on the positive and happy in life. It’s not always easy, especially when life throws you a wild detour, you know, like cancer. But I have found that there is joy, opportunities and lots of love in all situations. Sometimes you simply have to pause a little longer and look a little harder. At any rate, I decided to start a new feature on the blog called “Monday Motivation from Michigan.” My goal is to post a favorite quote or thought at least every other Monday. Just something to start our week on a happy, positive note. So stay tuned. 🙂
