Hearing the words “you have cancer” can be devastating. Cancer affects many areas of life, including finances. Treatment, co-pays, health insurance gaps (or none), inability to work and much more can negatively impact a patient’s finances. There are many wonderful financial resources for cancer survivors. I wanted to share some that I’ve come across during my journey as a three-time cancer survivor.
Financial resources for cancer survivors:*
The SAMFund (now part of Expect Miracles Foundation) – Assistance is provided to young adults struggling financially because of cancer. Free online support and education is also available. The SAMFund COVID-19 Emergency Fund offers one-time rent/mortgage payments during this pandemic.
Angels of Hope – This organization provides financial grants and other programs to patients in active treatment for any type of cancer. Support is available to only Michigan residents.
Livestrong – Cancer treatment leaves many survivors with fertility issues. Livestrong connects cancer survivors to discounted fertility preservation services and free medications. Navigation services are also available to offer support from diagnosis to life after treatment.
HairToStay– Being able to save your hair during chemo is amazing. HairToStay offers patients help with the costs of cold cap therapy during treatment. Cold capping during chemo narrows the blood vessels beneath the skin of the scalp, reducing the amount of chemo reaching hair follicles. This helps reduce hair loss during chemo. Read about my cold capping journey during chemo.
Cancer Care – Their financial assistance program covers treatment-related costs and co-pay assistance. There is also support for cancer patients in active treatment who are affected by coronavirus (COVID-19). Funding will help with non-treatment costs (food, transportation, child care, etc.).
Health Well Foundation – This foundation offers financial support with co-pays, premiums, deductibles and out-of-pocket expenses for supplies, supplements, surgeries and more.
One thing to note is that these charities have also been financially impacted by the pandemic. Many of them are experiencing increased usage of their services while having to cancel major fundraising events and campaigns. If you are able to make a donation, consider supporting one (or more) of these great nonprofits. Any amount helps and is appreciated.
