Reflecting on the year of ease

My word of the year for 2023 was EASE. Selected as a reminder to myself to choose situations and opportunities that bring the most ease to my life. As the clock winds down on 2023, I’ve been reflecting on the year of ease. Keep reading to learn why reflecting on your year is helpful and important.

Keeping my word close

My year of ease brought more travel!

Choosing ‘the year of EASE’ was an insightful experience. I really embraced the theme for my year and it comfortably sat in the back of my mind as I approached each new year.

The theme of ease helped me be intentional in decisions. It reminded me of my choices in every situation and my personal mantra – “You can’t always control what happens in life, but you can CHOOSE how you react and respond.” It helped me stay focused on choosing what would bring the most ease to my life.

My intentions for a year of EASE included:

  • Focus on situations, decisions and experiences that bring ease to my life.
  • Step back from people who bring drama, stress and disruption to my life, while warmly welcoming those who bring kindness, community, love and joy.
  • React less potently and anxiously to negative situations, drama and difficult people and instead respond with calm, neutral emotions.
  • Say YES to more activities, adventures and opportunities that make me smile, laugh, learn and explore my community and the world beyond.
  • Trust more in my decisions and instinct.
  • Embrace my high-vibe, positive energy self and my purpose in this world (spreading kindness and helping others).

Take time to look back and learn

We so often get excited about the start of something, but don’t pause to acknowledge, celebrate, savor the completion. Our society is programmed more and more in ‘go-go-go’ mode which doesn’t provide opportunity to pause and reflect.

I find reflection to be so important and valuable. Why?

  • It allows you opportunity to acknowledge what took place during a year of your life (how about we acknowledge how FORTUNATE we are to be alive another year!). The ups and downs. While the ‘downs’ aren’t always fun to reflect on, these so often provide important lessons and opportunities for growth and change. Or even time for remembering. For instance, the year my dad died, I spent a lot of time reflecting on memories and what a truly great dad he was. It was therapeutic to pause in these feelings of love.
  • Reflecting on moments of the past year can remind you to celebrate small milestones, acknowledge achievements and think of how you want to grow and change in the coming year.
  • It helps you release the heavy and that which didn’t serve you well in the year and you want to change in the new year.
  • I’m often reminded of the simple joys and blessings in my life that then expand my gratitude.

So I’m encouraging you to do just that right now! Before the countdown clock strikes 0 on this year, before we welcome a new year and focus on goals and excitement for the future, I invite you to join me in pausing to look back on this year. Look for the ‘a-ha’ moments of learning and awareness and smile at the simple joys you experienced.

Here are some questions to help you get started reflecting on the year:

  • If you chose a word of the year or theme, how did that word/theme direct your decisions and actions throughout the year?
  • What are some highlights of the past year? What stands out to you?
  • What were some challenges that you faced? How do you feel about how you handled them?
  • What were your goals/priorities? Did you achieve those goals/priorities? If yes, how did it make you feel? If not, what prevented you?
  • What are two key things that you learned about yourself this year?
  • What did you do this year that you’re proud of?
  • How did your body feel this year? How did you care for your body?
  • How do you feel about your relationships this year?
  • What self-care activities did you enjoy?
  • List three fun activities you participated in this year.
